Results can vary, but in a 68-week study involving 1,961 adults with obesity or excess weight and related health issues, participants lost an average of 35 pounds (or about 15% of their body weight). Those on a placebo lost an average of 6 pounds (or about 2.5% of their body weight). The average starting weight for both groups was around 232 pounds.
This study included adults with a BMI of 30 or higher, and those with a BMI of 27 or higher who also had weight-related medical conditions like high blood pressure or high cholesterol. Participants with type 2 diabetes were excluded. All participants followed a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity. About 7% of those taking other well-known medications (92 people) discontinued the study due to side effects, compared to 3.1% (20 people) in the placebo group.
